William of Orange was born in 1522, in the HRE, which is now known as Germany. William of Orange was part of the dutch revolt against the Spanish, and his actions led to an 80-years war, plus the independence of the dutch people.
William of Orange was the oldest of twelve children and had a Lutheran background. At age 11, he became the prince of orange, for his cousin(who was the prince of orange) died. He had to go to Netherlands to have a Catholic teaching, for to be a prince, you had to be Catholic. William of Orange was too young at the time, so King Charles V ruled until he was of age.
William of Orange was under tutor by Mary of Hapsburg and was the captain of a cavalry. Charles V was impressed, therefore by age 22, William of Orange was the commander of one of the armies of the King. In 1559, William of Orange was governor of the provinces of Holland, Zeeland, and Utrecht.
The Hapsburgs had two lines, the Spanish, and the German(HRE) lines. The German lines were under the Spanish, and William of Orange joined the Netherlands in a revolt. The Dutch claimed that Spain was controlling them too much, and wanted to end the rule of Spain. William of Orange was fed by religious persecution, for he believed in religious freedom for everyone.
William of Orange proclaimed about the revolt in public but was soon involved in several financial problems. The Spanish brought all suspected, "criminals to court, but William of Orange refused to come. He was proclaimed and outlaw, but because he was so famous, he easily managed to gather an army against the Spaniards.
There then was a war known as the 80-years war, and it lasted till 1648. The 80-years war ended with the dutch claiming independence. There was a large ransom put on the head of William of Orange, and he was assassinated in his home in July of 1584, by a catholic Frenchman.
