They also worshipped Baal, even though they knew that it was against God’s will to worship other god’s and to not worship the true holy one. If the Israelites did not worship God, they would receive punishments. All who do works against God’s will shall be punished.
When the Israelites were at the foot of Mount Sinai for the Commandment’s, they made an idol called the “golden calf” and worshipped the idol and not the true God. The Israelites knew it was not God’s will to worship idols, and to only believe in God. It was written in Exodus 20:3-4 “You shall have no other gods before me” and “You shall not make for yourself am image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below?” It was not God’s will for the Israelites to worship other gods so god gave them a punishment. The punishment was that God killed 3000 men from the estimated number of two million people. At first God wanted to destroy the Israelites but at Moses’s appeal, God only killed 3000 men. The Israelites were given punishment for not doing God’s will.
Later on, the Israelites started worshipping Baal. They also made many ashera poles and high places to burn incense. The Israelites done this evil and detestable thing in the eye’s of God many times. This violated many of the Ten Commandments. The Israelites did evil in the eyes of God. The Consequence for not worshipping God was very great this time. For they had to be under control as slaves in Assyria and Babylon for about 70 years till they were freed form Babylon. The people of Israel didn’t do the will of God, so God punished the Israelites for not worshipping him.
The Israelites did not listen to God and kept on doing things against God’s will. God forgave the Israelites every time they sinned. But God had to punish the Israelites, God being Justice. The Lord punished the Israelites both times when they sinned, when they made and worshipped the golden calf, and when they worshipped Baal. The Lord punishes all of those who do things against his will.
