In the Native American colonies, people grew up with different lifestyles and responsibilities. They did do many things that we do today, though.
Kids back then were babies and have next to no responsibilities up until they were six years old. They were given a big pillow on the front to wear just in case they fell.
Kids would then be given big kid clothing at the age of six, and went to Dame School, which focused on reading. At that age, they also helped with the housework. The big kid clothes for boys would be shorts or pants, with a long shirt and long stockings. Girls big kid clothing would be dresses and aprons.
Some work that they had to do would be cleaning, doing the pet work, and washing dishes. They also lacked many modern conveniences, so they had to fetch water, shake mattresses, and help their father with his work. They also had to do their laundry by hand.
At their first school, the Dame School, they would learn about reading, and it was taught by one woman. All the children would sit around her while she taught them. After passing Dame School most would go to learn arithmetic, writing, and many other subjects. They also had many apprenticeships, of which young men could learn a trade from an experienced tradesman. The boy or father would sign a contract for the boy to work in exchange for room and board. Sometimes the apprentice would take over the shop.
The Children also had free time. They liked to play Checkers, Nine Pins, Jacks and ball, Two hoops and four sticks, Hoop and Stick, Cup and Ball, and Baseball.
To become a grown up, girls had to get married, and officially move out of their parent's house. And sometimes they would get married at the age of 15, r later. Men reached adulthood when they began to support themselves, which was as early as 13, or 20 years old.
Access to college was limited to mostly young men, although there was sometimes an institution for women. Schools like Princeton, Yale, Harvard, and the college of William and Mary, still are very famous colleges. Many students who graduated from these schools were only in their young teens, even less than 18 years old!!
The people of back then grew up very differently than of today. Although there still are many similarities in the way we grow up. Like back then they still liked to play and had to do chores.
